Self-Esteem, The Key To Life

The primary resource predicting the success or failure of each person as a human being is a precious energy known as “self-esteem”. The adolescents who still demonstrate stages of social development appropriate for very young children are arrested in their growth. Indeed they are stuck at earlier infantile stage and become problems for parents, teachers, peers, society . . . and themselves.   Sensing their inadequacy, they live self-confirming prophecies that “I am not capable. . . I cannot learn . . . “I am no good at anything.”  They lack positive self-esteem.

One educator sums it up this way. “deep inside is a longing . . . a sense of hollowness wanting to be filled. It is a need to connect with a positive sense of self and with others. The more positive the self-image, the less painful the longing . . . the less positive the self-image the more painful the longing. Too often we use temporary “fillers” such as drugs, alcohol, compulsive anti-social activities to blot out the hunger and give a temporary sense of self. It is only as we find positive self respect and “connectedness to others” that we can sense our true value.  The painful longing diminishes and the hollowness is filled with self-worth. It is then that we even self-confirm positive images of ourselves.”

Studies have shown that self-esteem is not related to family, education, wealth, social class, geographical living area, father's occupation or having mother at home. It comes from the quality of relationships that exist between the child and those who play a significant role in his life. It is a person's assessment of “the self-pictures” reflected back to him from others daily.

Self-esteem is “a quiet inner knowing saying I'm glad to be me.”  It is a sense of self-respect, a feeling of self-worth.

Three main areas convey loveability and worth to children:

  • affirmation of their positive qualities from parents, teachers and other significant caretakers;
  • affirmation from peers and siblings
  • affirmation to themselves based on their own experiences of competency success (“I did that well.” “I am good at reading.” “Arithmetic is easy for me”)

Children value themselves to the extent they have been valued


Bullying Awareness Guidebook

Cyber and physical bullying are growing and undeniable problems, and like so many misunderstood issues, education and awareness are the best prevention tools we have. This guidebook's purpose is to do just that: educate students of all ages and their families about what bullying is, why it happens, and what they can do to prevent it.

Key elements of the guide include:

Two experts in the field were essential in our crafting of this guide. Dr. Ben Michaelis is a clinical psychologist and regular guest/contributor on Huffington Post, Fox News, and the Today Show. Dr. Steven C. Schlozman is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and also serves as the Associate Director of the Clay Center for Young Health Minds. Their combined expertise was an invaluable asset, allowing us to get a uniquely in-depth look at the truth of bullying.

Soo Bahk Do® Instructor Changing Lives In Oklahoma

Click to Join or Renew Federation MembershipDwayne  Townsend is an internationally certified Master level practitioner of the Soo Bahk Do® martial art system taught in Moo Duk Kwan® martial art schools worldwide.

He operates a certified studio in Owasso, Oklahoma and volunteers his time changing lives at the local Homes For Children Campus in Owasso.

1560778_523697531078071_555766827_n (1)Recently Master Townsend applied to the United States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation® and the United States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan FOUNDATION for grant support. He wanted to register ten children in his program as Federation members in order that they could formally advance in their studies with full recognition and legitimate Moo Duk Kwan® rank certification credentials acknowledging their accomplishments.

The Federation and Foundation worked together to fulfill his grant application and ten new Federation members were registered in Owasso, Oklahoma.

Here is what Master Townsend had to say about the results his grant yielded:

I can't express enough how grateful the children are for the membership and support provided by the United States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation® and The United States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan FOUNDATION, and how grateful I am to be a part of making this happen for these ten children.

Because of the generosity of both organizations, these children get to belong to a very positive and rewarding national organization with member community values that compliment the teaching they receive at the Owasso Campus. One immediate benefit they have received from the U.S. Federation memberships that you made possible is that once they were Federation members I was authorized to test these students (some of whom have been training with me for over a year) for legitimate Moo Duk Kwan® rank certification and I am happy to report they were all successful in their test and my recommendations to the Technical Advisory Committee were approved for them. We will have a promotion ceremony for them this Thursday.

These children have received a significant boost in self esteem and self confidence from their Soo Bahk Do training. Their receipt of national membership credentials with their name on them and international rank certificates also bearing their name is more important to them than many may think. It is not often in their challenged lives that such recongition is shined upon them. The award ceremony will be a celebration of their accomplishments when we award them their hard earned rank certifications. I can only tell you that this will be a highlight of these children's lives and you have helped make it happen.

Thank you so much for making this possible and supporting my work with them.

I hope this will help others and inspire them to reach out and START something either by volunteering their time or supporting those less fortunate through the Federation and the Foundation.
